Japan Visa Requirements for Filipinos
Philippine passport holders need a visa to enter Japan for tourism. Here is the standard document checklist for a short-term tourist visa, plus the steps to apply.
Document checklist
- Philippine passport — valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date, with at least 2 blank pages.
- Accomplished Japan visa application form — complete and signed, with no blank fields (write N/A where not applicable).
- Recent photo — 4.5cm x 3.5cm, white background, taken within the last 6 months.
- PSA-issued birth certificate — issued within the last year.
- PSA-issued marriage certificate — if married, issued within the last year.
- Daily itinerary in Japan — your planned schedule of activities for the whole stay.
- Bank certificate — proof of sufficient funds for your trip.
- Income Tax Return (Form 2316 or 1701) — or a letter of explanation if unavailable.
- Certificate of employment — with salary, position, and length of service; business registration documents (DTI/SEC) if self-employed.
Requirements can change. Always confirm the current list with the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines before applying.
How to apply
- Prepare all required documents completely and accurately.
- Submit your application through an agency accredited by the Embassy of Japan — the embassy does not accept direct walk-in applications for tourist visas.
- Pay the visa processing fee set by the accredited agency.
- Wait for processing, usually around 5–7 working days, and claim your passport from the agency.
Common reasons for refusal
- Incomplete or inconsistent documents (names, dates, or details that do not match across forms).
- Insufficient proof of funds or unclear source of income.
- Weak proof of ties to the Philippines (employment, business, family, property).
